Names may seem a petulant or replaceable part of our lives, but the nomenclature really does matter. There's a verbal flow, an association, and our identity is encompassed with our name whether we like it or not. The same goes for animals. When an animal becomes a pet and is bestowed a name, they respond to it just the same. When I first got my cat, my roommates and I did try to change his name, but eventually nothing else made sense besides the name he came with. Whether you like it or not, the name an animal has must stick, unless you want to replace the pet entirely.
The story here centers around the potential name change for a cat, and a potential breakup. The narrator has a cat, Luna. She starts seeing a guy, and finds out his sister is also named Luna. What are the chances? I guess not high, but sort of dramatic to demand a name change.
